Ranch Ramblin's

New Ramblin's at the Ranch

  • The holidays are behind us and another year has begun!  Happy New Year!

  • Christmas time was busy enough scheduling holiday time with all the family.  We left milk and cookies for Santa and carrots for the reindeer!

  • Dawnnell directs the kids' Christmas program at church every year.  They pulled off another great performance on the 17th of December!

  • Thanksgiving was full of turkey and all the trimmings.  Next year we'll celebrate at our house.

  • My dad stayed with us for opening weekend of deer season and went home with a doe for the freezer.  My brother also came up since he's the one that got our dad started hunting when he turned 65 years old a couple of years ago!  He took home a doe for the freezer.

  • Several hundred children enjoyed field trips during our Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch.  The Corn Box was still the biggest hit!

  • Dawnnell and her friend Valerie traveled to Cape Girardeau, MO, to hear Lisa Whelchel (remember Blair on The Facts of Life TV show?) speak at a local church on October 20.  Little did we know that we would be the only women out of about 2,000 there that were not wearing pink!  We did enjoy hearing Lisa's inspirational message, but will check out the exact details a little closer next time!

  • Congratulations to Vince and Lisa Tantone!  Vince and Lisa held their wedding with us on October 15.  Lisa is Taylor's fiddle teacher and also plays with our band during the Bluegrass Fest at the ranch.

  • Our Bluegrass Fest was a great day of music, food and fun!  The crowd enjoyed performances from Midnight Flight, The Lane Family, and our own personal band which we haven't come up with a name for yet!  Also, thanks and congratulations to all those who participated in our Fiddle Contest!

  • We enjoyed another gathering at Richard and Laurel Dunlap's Turtle Ranch at Louisburg, MO on September 23.  Richard has been our Camp Cookie a la mode for our gathering 6 years running!  We always enjoy our time and seeing our fellow poets at his place each fall.

  • Dawnnell got to meet Rhonda Vincent during Starvy Creek's annual Bluegrass Fest.  She even autographed a t-shirt for me!

  • The Stockman's School for Profit was a great success in September.  We had just under 20 in attendance and all went away with some new knowledge and projects for their own ranching and cattle operations.

  • We traveled to Broken Arrow, OK, to surprise Dawnnell's brother and sister-in-law for their 20th wedding anniversary on August 5.  Some of you will remember Danny and Kristi running our cook shack during the gathering.  Congratulations!

  • Fran Smith with Western Horseman magazine spent a couple of days with us this summer working on a feature article on the Rockin H Ranch.  We are super excited about this exposure and can't wait to see the article in print!  Watch for it in the November issue of your Western Horseman magazine!

  • We continue playing music with the guys at a local bookstore in Mansfield on Thursday nights.  If you're around, look us up!

  • Cody's parents will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception on August 19.  The kids bought them a grandfather clock for their anniversary present.  Congratulations!

  • Dawnnell, Taylor and Taylor's best friend Abby spent a week at church camp near Niangua, MO.  It's a great week, but it's always good to be home!

  • Some of you will remember that last year Cody bought Dawnnell a Longhorn cow and calf pair for her birthday.  (Not to worry--she really did love it!)  This year she got a Jersey milk cow and calf pair!  Now there's work to be done, but we love the fresh milk and butter!

  • Isabel (our granddaughter) has been spending time each week with us while her mom and dad finish up work schedules and summer school.  She and Taylor have had a ball playing Super Mario Brothers!

  • We celebrated the 4th in style at a little spot in the road community called Rader, MO.  The local church there feeds several hundred people a smoked pig (or 2!), lots of great food and puts on one of the best fireworks shows I have ever seen!

  • Congratulations to Kimi & Matt Wilson on the birth of their daughter Abbie on July 6.  Some of you will remember Kimi as one of our wranglers for the last couple of years.  We wish you all the best!

  • We held our first 2 weddings on the ranch on June 23rd and 30th.  Both were beautiful with creek side settings and chuck wagons and hay bales.  Congratulations to the newlyweds!  Watch for more information on weddings at the ranch in the future!

  • We performed for a fundraiser for the Mountain Grove Christian Arts Council on June 17.

  • We attended the 10th annual Echoes of the Trail Cowboy Gathering in Ft. Scott, KS, June 10-11.  Several poets, musicians, chuck wagon cooks and vendors helped put on another great show.

  • We attended a Holmes-Lovelace family reunion on June 3 in Branson, MO.  While there, we visited fellow cowboy poet and Canadian recording artist Eli Barsi.  Eli has a wonderful weekly show at the beautiful Chateau on the Lake with her husband, John Cunningham.  Dawnnell got the chance to take center stage and performed a couple of songs with Eli & John while there.  Thanks, Eli!  You guys are great!  To find out more about Eli, visit her website.

Taylor's Tidbits

Since we work on school nearly year round, Taylor is working on 5th grade.  Science is now her favorite subject.  She continues to work on her fiddle and is progressing right along!  She still has Icky and Josie (her pet calves) and plenty of cats...(anybody need a barn cat?!)  Spare time is spent with her animals or engrossed in a book, or both, when she reads to her pets!

Taylor's latest excitement is her new pig, Oreo.  She is a Hampshire pig and loves to have her back scratched!  Taylor will be selling her piglets and is fast making Oreo the biggest pet at the ranch!

Cowboy Poetry & Western Lore

When not entertaining on the ranch, we often entertain others with our love of western heritage and lore through cowboy poetry, verse and song.  With a guitar or banjo, bass or hammered dulcimer and fiddle, we entertain and often find an opportunity to relate to the audience tidbits of information about ranching and rural life.    It is often an opportunity to link our now so distant views with our ever closer suburban neighbors.  Many times an educational process begins that stretches far beyond feed prices and retail mall shopping.

We are all members of the Missouri Cowboy Poets Association, whose membership ranges throughout Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.  It's mission is to preserve the Cowboy Heritage of America.  We are often invited to perform our western songs and poetry at functions that are agriculturally related and many that are not.

We would love to entertain for your special event.  Contact us today for scheduling information.
