Beauty By Nature – Carol's Daughter Expands Uptown
|
Uptown – February '06
Writer Tonya Leslie wrote: "I have been a huge fan of Carol's Daughter's hair products. They really filled a hole in the market. For such a long time, there were no products for women with natural hair like mine."
Harlem has long been home to icons of style. Now it's home to the products that keep today's movers and shakers fierce. Carol's Daughter, purveyors of natural beauty products "inspired by nature", opened a flagship store in the heart of Harlem's historic 125th Street this past September.
"When we talk of Harlem, we talk of 125th Street as the place where you went if you were successful," says Price, founder of Carol's Daughter." Historically for African Americans, it's a sign that you've made it. It's our 5th Avenue."
"It's a natural fit," says Price. We could've gone to Soho or 5th Avenue but, to me, you go where you have a history and a legacy - and that's Harlem."
Carol's Daughter opened with the red carpet fanfare that would be expected of its new high profile investors but, it was the magic of Harlem itself that propelled the opening from celebrity event to community celebration. "The neighborhood came out to greet us." It was an emotional moment, something tin the energy," says Price. "It wasn't captured on camera. It was amazing seeing the community get excited!"
Carol's Daughter is set to be more than just a quick stop on your product hit list. With recent promotions and events with community artists like author Jill Nelson and singer Fantasia, Carol's Daughter is primed to become a local hub of literary and artistic expression.
